The Islands of Loreto
Considered the 'head' and 'Mother' of all the missions of Baja California, the Mission of our Lady of Loreto was the starting point from which the Jesuit friars came to evangelize the new territory of America. This mission was founded in 1697 by Juan María de Salvatierra, who also introduced the first settlement of Spanish origin in the region.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the temple underwent numerous renovations and currently keeps a sober stone facade Baroque style, with some pillars on which rests a frieze that reza the legend: head and mother of the missions of Baja and Alta California. Facade, on a pedestal, is the image of our Lady of Loreto accompanied by the date of Foundation of the mission.
Inside, the venue still retains a simple altar accompanied by some pictures with images alluding to the Jesuit order. Other relics include numerous objects used during the Catholic rites, a Baroque Churrigueresque main altarpiece, oil paintings, and the original image of the Virgin of our Lady of Loreto.
If you are visiting in the region, don't forget to take a tour of the different missions that welcomes Baja California, as the Mission of Santa Rosalía de Mulegé, which is located in the town of the same name. This beautiful construction of quarry is considered the jewel of the Baja California missions due to its imposing architecture.
