National Marine Park

Just outside the coast of Loreto are five desert islands just waiting to be explored. Among the most popular are the Coronado Islands which are part of the largest marine natural reserve in Mexico. The Loreto Bay National Marine Park was officially created in 1996 and extends for over 61 km (38 miles) along the coast, and 35 km (21 miles) offshore. Large fishing boats are prohibited in this region, thus allowing local fishermen to survive by selling the products they obtain from the sea.

Coronado Island itself is small. It is a place covered by volcanic cacti, white sand beaches and a nearby rocky islet. Crossing its eight kilometers (5 miles) takes about 20 minutes by “panga” as canoes are usually called. Once you reach the shore, you will be able to enjoy a spacious area in which you can practice both hiking and beach activities. The pale blue water bathing the ivory colored sand offers and exceptional opportunity for diving or snorkeling.

The Coronado Islands complex includes the Del Carmen, Danzante, Montserrat and Santa Catalina islands and, of course, the Coronado Island, in addition to the caves, lakes and other crystal clear waters which surround them. The five islands create a protective shelter for marine life. Among the most common sightings you will be able to enjoy are flying fish, dolphins and sea lions. Underwater, you can enjoy a wonderful variety of colorful fish and other marine life.
